About Us About Us
St. John's Presbyterian Church is located at 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley, at the corner of College and Derby streets.

St. John's Presbyterian Church was originally located in the building now known as the Julia Morgan Theatre. In 1955, the church bought the present property on College and Forest and occupied the fellowship hall and adjoining classrooms while maintaining various ministries on "two campuses." In 1968, a generous bequest from Dr. Howard Campbell made it possible to complete the building of the new church and all the necessary accessory areas. In 1974, the "old church" was vacated and services were temporarily held in the Fellowship Hall until the sanctuary was finished one year later. In late 1978 the final mortgage payment had been made on the entire property and a grand service of burning the mortgage was held.

Dining Ideas

Nan Yang

6048 College Ave.
(510) 655-3298

Sound Burmese food in modern surroundings. Try the ginger salad, curried fish, fried onion cakes, eight treasure bean curd

Oliveto
5655 College Ave. (at Shafter)
(510) 547-5356

Paul Bertolli serves the best Italian food in the Bay Area. Benchmark fresh pastas, grilled pigeon, veal Milanese. Casually professional service

La Mediterranée
2936 College Ave. (Ashby Ave.)
(510) 540-7773

This "dependable" duo "fills a niche" with its "flavorful" (if "not spectacular") Middle Eastern-Mediterranean fare, catering to phyllo fans in search of "bargain prices"; but aesthetes assert the "cramped quarters" need "upgrading."

Shen Hua
2914 College Ave. (bet. Ashby Ave. & Russell St.)
(510) 883-1777

"Very good" "off-the-beaten-track dishes" bathed in "delectable sauces" and served in "an elegant modern setting" are reasons to go to this "interesting" Chinese in Berkeley's Elmwood district -- and the "grumpy", "frantic service" are reasons to go the "take-out" route.
